Publisher's Summary

THE HEART-POUNDING NEW NOVEL IN THE KAREN PIRIE SERIES, NOW A MAJOR ITV SERIES STARRING LAUREN LYLE

Edinburgh, haunted by the ghosts of its many writers, is also the cold case beat of DCI Karen Pirie. So she shouldn't be surprised when an author's manuscript appears to be a blueprint for an actual crime.

Karen can't ignore the plot's chilling similarities to the unsolved case of an Edinburgh University student who vanished from her own doorstep. The manuscript seems to be the key to unlocking what happened to Lara Hardie, but there's a problem: the author died before he finished it.

As Karen digs deeper, she uncovers a spiraling game of betrayal and revenge, where lies are indistinguishable from the truth and with more than one unexpected twist . . .

The Queen of Crime Val McDermid is at the top of her game in her most gripping and fiendishly clever case yet.

Monotone Narration

The narrator of this story brought no life to the characters or plot. They didn’t even use the punctuation to break sentences or emphasise action. There were parts that seemed to have been edited together poorly.
I constantly found myself backtracking to understand what was happening and who was speaking.
Such a shame as this one was a great yarn from the start.

Storyline

Joy Ellis is a fantastic story weaver, another great tartan noir story. I await more Karen Pirie

As usual the storyline was extremely well written.

The narration of the last book in this series spoilt it for me. It was stilted with very little difference between characters.

Struggled with the narration - flat and dull.

The narration was a complete disappointment. Struggled to stay with this book as the dull narration droned on and distracted from the plot. No distinction between characters. Not the usual Karen Pirie / Val McDermid experience. A let down.

Narration very disappointing

I’m only half way through and am struggling with the narration. Flat and poor editing. I’ll keep plugging in because it’s a Val McDermid novel. Sigh!!

Great new instalment

Despite some very obvious issues with editing particularly early on, this is a great story incorporating life during Covid and on. Worth a listen

Best KP book yet!

I have listened to so many great stories recently but this was the BEST!!! I’m a bit of a crime junky so delving into the world of crime writers was wonderful. The authors is so meticulous and I left feeling thoroughly sated but miserable I have to wait for the next chapter.
A few authors have delved into those dark COVID lockdown days but this really hit the mark and rang true even to a listener half way round the world.
I would hate the KP narrator to change. I think she’s excellent but I do run the speed at .95 perhaps due to the accent for my Aussie ears.
Thank you for a marvellous book that I could not stop listening to.
I’ve given a few 5/5’s but it’s only when you come across such a great book (as this is) that sets the bar high that you stop and reflect. This will be my new yard stick to judge others by.
Thank you.

oh Lauren Lyle :(

I love Lauren Lyle in the TV show, but I am really struggling to listen to her reading. I loved the other audio books in the series and wish they'd have kept the same narrator. Lauren Lyle is just not keeping my attention. I had to go back to the beginning a few times cause my attention just keeps drifting off.

Poor reading

Please don’t let Lauren Lyle read any more audiobooks. She reads too fast, so I had to slow the pace. She inserts commas between subject and verb, particularly when the subject is a name, as in “Karen, took out her phone.” Just wrong and very annoying. She does not put on different voices or accents, except for English, for the different characters, and she mispronounces words. Her reading almost destroyed this excellent book.

Great story set in lockdown Scotland

I very, very much like Val McDermid’s books, so was disappointed by the narrator chosen for this, her latest Karen Pirie book. Lauren Lyle did not narrate distinctly often gulping the last part of her sentences. The publisher should have stuck with Cathleen McCarron who was brilliant in her narration of the earlier novels. I solved that by buying the e-book! Really great plot. Took me back to the severe (but in my opinion necessary) lockdowns where I lived in Australia. Love Val’s books and love Scotland.
