Publisher's Summary

The early years of a little girl's life will shape her future in powerful ways.

Maggie Dent, Australia's queen of common-sense parenting, has investigated the development period from birth to age eight.

Drawing on nearly 5,000 survey results, the latest research, and her own extensive experience as an educator, counsellor, facilitator, mum and grandmother, Maggie shows us how to help our girls build an emotional and psychological base for life.

Secure foundations, Maggie argues, will help insulate our girls against anxiety and other mental health challenges as they grow into their teens and feel more capable and resilient while keeping their own authentic voice as they enter womanhood.

Written with all the rigour, compassion and humour we have come to expect from one of Australia's best-loved parenting voices, this is both a deeply practical guide to raising girls, as well as a celebration and intimate meditation on the state of being female, which women of all ages will relate to.

Wow! Hit the nail on the head

Maggie Dent has hit the nail on the head. From start to end I loved it. I think previous listener could have adapted the speed to adjust the reading if it did not suite. I enjoyed the pace & clear communication. Highly recommend

Opened my eyes to my own childhood

From my parenting perspective: I have been made very aware of my shortcomings and insufficient parenting thanks to 3 of my adult children, thankfully 2 children still have rational thinking to rely on. I have always felt I was in touch with the life have been thrown into and had processed the damage I have survived from childhood, teen and adult trauma.
From my ECEC perspective: it helps me to use critical reflection from a deeper level of understanding when children are struggling. I feel better equipped to support educators as an educational leader.

A must for parents of daughters

A wonderfully written book that had me crying, smiling and laughing throughout. I loved listening to Maggie read this book, as I felt like she was right there giving me advice and wisdom on raising a caring and strong little girl. So much incredible research on raising girls and thoughtful insights into supporting our girls. Thank you Maggie for another wonderfully written book!

Great, as expected from Maggie

I think the previous reviewer was perhaps listening at less than 1.0x speed. Lovely to listen to.

Maggie’s words are like a warm hug from a dearly missed loved one

Parenting in this world is the toughest challenge I have ever willingly agreed to. Maggie delivers another exceptional bible for those of us who are struggling and no doubt those that aren’t. I’m sure you hear often Maggie but from my heart to yours - thank you for being a bright light in a sometimes pitch black tunnel… I am forever grateful for your wisdom and acceptance that perfect imperfection is the goal…

Beautiful

Written from the heart. The most authentic material I have read on raising our most precious people - our boys and girls. Thank you Maggie.

So incredibly helpful

I am a mum to a 5 year old girl and step mum to a 9 year old girl. I haven’t finished the book yet and I have just ordered 2 hard copies. This is invaluable advice for raising girls. Thank you

Invaluable but approachable parenting resource

Absolutely loved listening to Girlhood. Full of practical guidance, and written and told with such care and thoughtfulness. This should be a prerequisite read prior to having children!
