Publisher's Summary

Dr. Ross Greene, a distinguished clinician and pioneer in the treatment of kids with social, emotional, and behavioral challenges, has worked with thousands of explosive children, and he has good news: these kids aren't attentionseeking, manipulative, or unmotivated, and their parents aren't passive, permissive disciplinarians. Rather, explosive kids are lacking some crucial skills in the domains of flexibility/adaptability, frustration tolerance, and problem solving, and they require a different approach to parenting.

The Explosive Child is the highly acclaimed, lifechanging parenting guide in which Dr. Greene first delineated the Collaborative Problem Solving approach.  Dr. Greene explains why kids exhibit challenging behaviors, why traditional behavior management strategies may not be effective for many kids, and how to use Plan B to solve problems collaboratively and teach your child the skills he or she is lacking.

As the model has evolved over the years, so has The Explosive Child, and it is available here in an abridged and updated fourth edition narrated by Dr. Greene.

Throughout this compassionate, insightful, and practical book, Dr. Greene provides a new conceptual framework for understanding their difficulties.  He explains why traditional parenting and treatment often don't work with these children, and he describes what to do instead. Instead of relying on rewarding and punishing, Dr. Greene's Collaborative Problem Solving model promotes working with explosive children to solve the problems that precipitate explosive episodes, and teaching these kids the skills they lack.

Simply Epic!

It's hard enough having an explosive child, being uncertain of what they need, feeling confused as to which parenting style is most effective and then being judged for it anyway.
What an insightful - yet totally common sense - way of understanding and connecting with your child (who is struggling) and therefore, mixing the right ingredients to bake a healthy family dynamic.

overall good info

I really liked the narration, it felt like a conversation, not a reading, I guess that's what it is like when you read your own content. The material was good, I liked the phrase kids do well if they can, and also that fair doesn't always mean equal, I'll have to remind my kids of that one specifically.

I see how much my daughter lacks the skills of self regulation and problem solving... I wish there had been more solution examples, mostly because I often feel at a loss for solutions myself, that aren't punishments. perfect example is around lying. my kids were"caught" in a lie today, and it's not the first time, not the last time, but I want it to be the last time. I don't know how to stop it and I suspect they won't have any ideas on how to bring lasting change either...

No explosions since I listened to this book...

This book has changed our lives. There have been no explosions in our home since I listened to this book nearly a month ago. The techniques are simple to apply, to the point where it's a little embarrassing I needed someone to teach me these lessons. As most children have the potential to explode from time to time and the plans to deal with this apply to everyday parenting, this book is a must have in every parent's arsenal.

Best 99 cents I've ever spent !!

This book is the most practical, relatable (so relatable) informative and instructive piece literature I have read on this difficult and exhausting experience of parenting "explosive" children.
Easy listening narration. Short and direct enough to be easily digestible.

Great for any parent really!

This book has really helped me understand why kids act out and why I have acted out in my own childhood. And it is great that he related the behaviour of children to that of adults, because we forget that we have tantrums ourselves at time and can’t expect perfection from another human being.
