Story
From Louisa May Alcott's beloved classic Little Women, Geraldine Brooks has animated the character of the absent father, March, and crafted a story "filled with the ache of love and marriage and with the power of war upon the mind and heart of one unforgettable man" (Sue Monk Kidd). With "pitch-perfect writing" (USA Today), Brooks follows March as he leaves behind his family to aid the Union cause in the Civil War. His experiences will utterly change his marriage and challenge his most ardently held beliefs.

Publisher's Summary
As a young girl in a working-class neighborhood of Sydney, Australia, Geraldine Brooks longed to discover the places where history happens and culture comes from, so she enlisted pen pals who offered her a window on adolescence in the Middle East, Europe, and America.
Twenty years later, Brooks, an award-winning foreign correspondent, embarked on a human treasure hunt to find her pen friends. She found men and women whose lives had been shaped by war and hatred, by fame and notoriety, and by the ravages of mental illness.
Intimate, moving, and often humorous, Foreign Correspondence speaks to the unquiet heart of every girl who has ever yearned to become a woman of the world.

Well crafted journey
Geraldine feels like an old friend telling you her story, with just enough detail to suffice, intrigue, and amuse. She brings a real sense of camaraderie to the reader, allowing you to enjoy your own Australian story instead of cutting it down like a tall poppy. She understands people so well and this shines through the whole book.

can't do it!
The narrator is very monotonous and it kind of ruins the story for me, sorry no offence, i'm sure it's a great book...but i was not able to enjoy listening to it.
