Since the day Lord Dillon earned his spurs, rumors of his savagery on the battlefield have preceded him into every room, stilling tongues and sparking fear. Weary of battle, he wishes only to find a woman he can wed who will approach him not with fear but with the tenderness that has been absent from his life for so long. Yet only the wisewoman seems invariably at ease in his presence.
For seven years Alyssa has been by Lord Dillon's side - counseling him from the shadows, healing him, and staving off the worst of his loneliness. Blessed - or cursed - with gifts that label her a sorceress, she is forced to conceal her youth and the love she harbors for him, leading Dillon and his people to believe she is the same wisewoman who served his father.
All is revealed, however, and passions flare when an enemy threatens Dillon's life and Alyssa sacrifices everything to save him. When Dillon discovers that the wisewoman is far from elderly, he is instantly entranced. And, as he and Alyssa work together to defeat an enemy bent on destroying them both, Dillon will risk anything - even the wrath of his king - to be with her.

"As in the best audiobooks, it's the joining of Duvall's carefully constructed romance and Potter's consummate voices that yields this excellent production." (AudioFile Magazine)

"The Story Was Great but......."
The story was great, but after listening to Dianne Duvall advising this story helped inspired her to write the Immortal Guardians series I was hoping to learn how the Gifted Ones, Seth and the others and how they became into existence and their back stories. Seth, Roland, and Marcus were mentioned in the story but played a very small role. I was left with more questions than answers. :-)
I loved the attraction and love Alyssa had for Lord Dillon years prior to there ever being a relationship between them. I also thought it was priceless when Dillon finally was able to see her and all the scars she bore from healing him throughout the years. One of Alyssa's gifts, is to heal; however, sometimes she has to take the injuries onto herself in order to heal the person fully. After that, Dillon was very protective of her and monitored her closely when she healed others.
Again, this was a great fantasy that involved a few "gifted ones" and was an even better love story between Dillon and Alyssa. It definitely has me ready for the next Immortal Guardians story!
For any Dianne Duvall fan, this is an excellent addition to your collection and Kirsten Potter does a great job narrating the story.
"Another Great Begining!"
While everyone is talking about Seth and Roland's appearance in this story, they failed to recognize that Marcus and Robert are also in this book. If you have not heard any of the Immortal Guardians, then you will not know who these people are. But that will not take away from this book as Robert is the only one that stays with this book and we have not gotten his whole story yet.
This story takes place in the late 1100's and is the story of Dillion and his sorceress Alyssa. The people fear her, call her Witch, and think she is an old lady. Dillion also thinks she is a old lady until the night she heals him from a mortal injury and almost dies. Then he finds out that she is not the old lady he thought she was and his love for her starts to grow. Together they face danger and the people's fear of her as Dillion must find a way to make her his Lady.
I have to say that one of my favorite parts of this book is how Robert begins to change the peoples fear of Alyssa even as he overcomes his own. I hope we get Robert's full story next.
"Outstanding..... Ready for verge Next Book"
I absolutely loved this book. My favorite genres are historical romance and paranormal Romance I get the best of both worlds.
So this means that I'm ready for the next installment I want to hear Roberts story now.
Unlike the average historical romances especially those that are more in the midevil era these characters are older and so I think the story lends itself to be more in depth. There wasn't a lot of nonsense about "does he love me or not". It was more about a persons love enduring and self-sacrificing which for me is the best love story of all.
"Story is half great, half dull. Narration is great"
Well this book started out absolutely fantastic! Up to about 36%. Then got a bit dull and somewhat repetitive and it felt like a lot of filler nonsense was taking up the pages. It picked up again at about 70%. There are a lot of thoughts going on from Dillon that were just kind of annoying making him more of a lovesick hero than a strong manly knight that everyone supposedly feared.
I enjoyed Alyssa's character very much. She was strong, smart, and beautiful. I liked all the gifts she had and that concept was great. It would have been nice if she had discovered more about her gifts a history or background or something and if she had had some sort of meeting or dialogue with Seth. But nope there was none. I feel like if you haven't read the immortal guardians series you would be a bit lost or confused as a reader.
I really liked the story line and plot. I liked that Seth and Roland showed up even if it was only for a minute.
And it's sad to say but after 40% the best parts of the book were when Alyssa and Dillon were not together. I know! I know! It's hard to believe I am saying this but it's true. The thoughts and dialogue with them were just boring, annoying and repetitive. But when they were apart there was action things happening and it was entertaining.
There is sex in this book, quite a bit of sex. There is a quite a bit of dialogue too.
I have read all the Immortal Guardians books and this one is not nearly as good as any of them. I believe the author wrote this book before the immortal guardians series and this is what inspired to her to write the Immortal Guardians which I am thankful for. So I will definitely read the next book in this series because I think it will be fresher and not full of dull filler nonsense.
As for the narration, it was fantastic! You can never go wrong with Kirsten Potter, she gives everyone a voice, the men sound like men and she reads with emotion. She made this story better in my opinion.
Wonderful story. Again Dianne has crafted characters to fall in love with. Highly recommended. Stayed up all night to finish it
Love Dianne's books! Truly looking forward to the next one!! Dianne manages to make me laugh and cry. Her characters are so diverse and Kirsten Potter is wonderful!!!
"Loved this book!"
I loved this book. A good starter book for the Immortal Guardians series. I wish there were more based in this time period.
"A great listen. A book to loose yourself in."
Once in awhile you will find a book you can loose yourself in and this is one of them. The narration was excellent the story and characters well thought out and engaging.
I would highly recommend this book to any who like fantasy and and historic story lines
Can't wait for book two
"Great story.. I want a lord of my own"
I love this story. It's a new series in the making that will lead and tie into the immortal guardian series. This story is filled with suspense, love, hope, and steamy encounters. Plenty of witty banter. I can't wait for the next book. So worth a credit. The narrator like always is fantastic. Don't wait or pass it up. Download it !!!
"A little better than OK for me.."
Yay! Seth and Roland are in this book, and it was so nice seeing them. I just love Dianne Duvall’s Immortal Guardians series, in which Seth and Roland appear. AND book 6 in that series is coming out August 25 and I’m so excited.
As to this book? It started off good then at about 40% started to drag and the dialogue was rather boring, too. It picked up somewhere around 75%. I'm giving it 4 stars for the beginning and the end.
There really was no sexual tension to speak of. Oh, they made love 2 or 3 or 4 times but it was nothing to write home about. No feelings or thoughts led up to it really.
It was pretty cool how she healed him, until it nearly cost her her life. And the other *gifts* she started discovering was kind of amazing. I especially liked her telekinetic power, which came after she was healed.
The secondary characters were just great: Robert, Simon, Michael, Geoffrey and Meg. And the way Ms. Duvall described Gavin I could almost smell his stinky self. Of course, Camden was absolutely whacked and made a wonderful bad guy.
This was not nearly as good as her Immortal Guardians books. But it was OK. It certainly would not stop me from reading DD’s books.
As to the narrator: I like Ms. Potter's reading voice and her voices but I just noticed she doesn't have any emotion when she reads, not enough to notice, anyway. Oh, she did yell when Dillon came to rescue Alyssa, but other than that I can honestly say I don't remember anything else. For all the laughter shared by Dillon and Alyssa in the book I can't remember once when Ms. Potter laughed, as the book called for. Ms. Potter has her moments, with good and OK narration, and this was just OK as far as I'm concerned.
I have never read any of this authors books but having listened to this I will seek others out as she spins a enthralling tale that holds the reader or in my case listener captive. It is 04.43 and I have just finished listening to this book unable to stop it to sleep without hearing the end, a truly excellent book.
"A wonderful book could read it over & over again."
The characters are believable and rich. The author has used the history of the time we'll.
