Story
Katelyn smiles around at her husband and friends, gathered to celebrate her 36th birthday in their beautiful home decorated with fairy lights. But the next day Katelyn wakes up shaken and terrified in a hospital bed. She doesn’t remember the sweet taste of birthday cake icing, or how angry her best friend was at midnight, or the terrible things her husband said. She doesn’t remember the party at all. When she asks her husband what happened the night of the party he says "nothing". But her blood runs cold at the way his voice lilts slightly. The way it always does when he is lying.

Publisher's Summary
On the first day of summer in 1993, two strangers arrive in the town of Cedar Valley.
One is a calm looking man in a brown suit. He makes his way down the main street and walks directly to Cedar Valley Curios & Old Wares, sitting down on the footpath, where he leans silently against the big glass window for hours.
The other is 21-year-old Benny Miller. Fresh out of university, Benny has come to Cedar Valley in search of information about her mother, Vivian, who has recently died. Vivian's mysterious old friend, Odette Fisher, has offered Benny her modest pale green cottage for as long as she wants it.
Is there any connection between the man on the pavement and Benny's quest to learn more about her mother? Holly Throsby is the perfect guide as Cedar Valley and its inhabitants slowly reveal their secrets.

Good and bad
Simple writing style, well read in Taylor-Neilson’s quintessentially Aussie voice. Enjoyed the meandering story and the building intrigue but disappointed in the abrupt, underwhelming conclusion. Also found the authors constant and repeated use of characters full names (and often occupation) irritating, juvenile and completely unnecessary. Probably wouldn’t recommend it.

Love!!!
Another beautifully descriptive story where you are transported to the small town and immersed in her characters. Cedar Valley will become a place to want to visit and its inhabitants are people you'll wish you knew ❤

Loved the narrator. I'm off to find more of Jaimee Taylor-Nielson. The narration can be make or break for me. Recommended.

Too simplistic
I enjoyed Holly's Goodwood so looked forward to this one. I found the writing quite annoyingly simple and was often reminded of the First Readers little books that my children read in 2nd class.

Returned, couldn't hold my attention
I couldn't finish this story. It was a bit lightweight for my taste. Narrator was doing a good job but sounded like a teenager. Probably a good story for someone who ISN'T looking for a gritty psychological thriller...
