Publisher's Summary

Brisbane 1999. It's hot. Stormy. Dangerous. The waters of the Brisbane River are rising.

The rains won't stop. People's nerves are on edge. And then...
A body is found.
And then another.
And another.

A string of seemingly ritualized but gruesome murders. All the victims are men. Affluent. Guys with nice houses, wives and kids at private schools. All have had their throats cut.
Tabloid headlines shout, THE VAMPIRE KILLER STRIKES AGAIN!

Detective Sergeant Lara Ocean knows the look. The 'my-life-will-never-be-the-same-again look'. She's seen it too many times on too many faces. Telling a wife her husband won't be coming home. Ever again. Telling her the brutal way he was murdered. That's a look you never get used to.

Telling a mother you need her daughter to come to the station for questioning. That's another look she doesn't want to see again.

And looking into the eyes of a killer, yet doubting you've got it right. That's the worst look of all - the one you see in the mirror. Get it right, you're a hero and the city is a safer place. Get it wrong and you destroy a life. And a killer remains free. Twenty years down the track, Lara Ocean will know the truth.

confusing narrative

this story is told by a number of different narrators but as these are not introduced by the 'reader' it can be difficult to keep track of who is saying or doing what. I assume that in the printed version of the book changes of narrator are indicated in some way, such as paragraph breaks.

Weaves like a river, but weird start

Took a while for any flow with the story, at first seemed to jump without any apparent cohesion, but came good and was worth persisting

Fantastic Book

Best book ive read in a long time. I absolutely loved how Cavanaugh used real Brisbane history mixed with a fictional story which made it more believable for me. Ive lived through a lot of these things mentioned and that includes the not quite mentioned police force antics before and after the Fitzgerald enquiry which made it all the more conceivable. This book was so well structured and a very high quality writing with a great mix of classic and modern alliteration which came together so clearly. I loved the metaphors which did not detract from the story or slow it down. This book is a piece of skilled craft. Highly recommended. I expected nothing and was delighted with a great read.

Really good

Was expecting a police procedural but this was a lot more. Good story, hung together over broad periods. Nice. Raced through it.

Unexpected!

Not your typical murder mystery. Unexpected great listen. Love this narrator. Looking forward to more from both.

Disturbing...to say the least!

Being a Brisbanite I was eager to listen to this.
Good story but I found many times throughout the reading that I was unsure of who was 'talking and had to pause and rewind to get it straight.
I picked the killer early on, as no doubt the author intended but even so I had lingering doubts and couldn't wait to see if I was right.
It was good to be able to visualise where certain events took place. Happy to recommend as long as you like a little 'macarbe' in your reading.
