Story
Australia's leading social psychologist examines our society today and asks timely and urgent questions about its future. Life is messy. Relationships are complex. Outcomes are uncertain. Yet, none of our differences—whether based on ethnicity, politics, religion, cultural tastes and preferences, or gender—are nearly as significant as the humanity we share. Amidst our epidemics of loneliness, anxiety, depression, and the impacts of entrenched poverty and ubiquitous technology, The Way We Are examines the major trends that are shaking the foundations of the Australian way of life.

Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. Story
Young Elly's world is shaped by those who inhabit it: her loving but maddeningly distractible parents; a best friend who smells of chips and knows exotic words like 'slag'; an ageing fop who tapdances his way into her home, a Shirley Bassey impersonator who trails close behind; lastly, of course, a rabbit called God. In a childhood peppered with moments both ordinary and extraordinary, Elly's one constant is her brother Joe. Twenty years on, Elly and Joe are fully grown and as close as they ever were. Until, that is, an earth-shattering event that threatens to destroy their bond for ever.

Publisher's Summary
From the bestselling author of Phosphorescence comes a beautiful and timely exploration of that most mysterious but necessary of human qualities: grace.
SHORTLISTED FOR THE 2024 INDIE BOOK AWARDS
SHORTLISTED FOR THE 2024 ABIA GENERAL NON-FICTION BOOK OF THE YEAR
LONGLISTED FOR THE 2024 BOOKPEOPLE NON-FICTION BOOK OF THE YEAR
'Luminous ... A work to both devour and savour, Baird has, once again, written a book the world needs now.' Guardian
Grace is both mysterious and hard to define. It can be found when we create ways to find meaning and dignity in connection with each other, building on our shared humanity, being kinder, bigger, better with each other. If, in its crudest interpretation, karma is getting what you deserve, then grace is the opposite: forgiving the unforgivable, favouring the undeserving, loving the unlovable.
But we live in an era when grace is an increasingly rare currency. The silos in which we consume information dot the media landscape like skyscrapers, and our growing distrust of the media, politicians and public figures has choked our ability to cut each other slack, to allow each other to stumble, to forgive one another.
So what does grace look like in our world, and how do we recognise it, nurture it in ourselves and express it, even in the darkest of times?
From award-winning journalist Julia Baird, author of the acclaimed national bestseller Phosphorescence, comes Bright Shining, a luminously beautiful, deeply insightful and most timely exploration of grace.
'Fascinating, wide-ranging and moving' The Age
'The uplift and power of Bright Shining ... is to be found in the way Baird gives grace fresh currency by bringing this beautiful and elusive condition from the theological margins into the mainstream and showing, with passion and verve, how quietly transformative it can be.' Sydney Morning Herald
'Enlightening, surprising, absorbing .. I learned something every chapter and put the book down full of awe at the power of human beings to be good to each other when no-one would expect it. It's the book I needed to read right now. It filled my cup.' Annabel Crabb

The Real Story from Julia Baird about what IS most important in life.
This is Julia's best book even though I loved Phosphoresence .. Sharing honestly from the heart and head I felt so much connection with her stories about cancer & surgeries and awfulness of recovery yet of the ways in which we can find grace & gratitude.

grace
Grace abounds in this work. Well researched, thoughtful, respectful. Examining this "thing"called Grace, weaving its tendrils through the darkest, worst, the most joyful and darkest corners of humanity as well as showing us the sheer awe of the natural world. A gift. A great piece that will stay with me for some time. One to give away. Thankyou Julia

Not what I expected
I thought a book about grace would be calming, uplifting and full of gratitude. There were moments of these emotions, and there were also many moments that showed the human race for its capacity to be ungracious, disturbing, and cruel.
When I first started listening, I wondered if I'd bought the wrong book, and almost returned it. It didn't seem to match up with the description. If I want to hear stories of woe, I'll just turn on the news. However, I persisted, because it intrigued me enough to see where it was going.
For those with a history of trauma, grief, or serious illness, I'd suggest a trigger warning. Having said that, if you can steel your emotions, you will find a really interesting book. I learned quite a lot about things I didn't know.

This book is a gift
It broke my heart… but as Leonard Cohen sang… that’s how the light gets in. Thankyou ❤️ for reminding us of the privilege of the sun shining on our faces, about the importance of standing up for what we believe in, being brave enough to love, the power of forgiveness and the necessity of truth telling about our country … this book is a gift from an extraordinary thinker and a wonderful writer with a big heart and a big brain. Listen….

Thought provoking in a good way.
I loved the pace and premise of this book. Concepts accompanied by diverse examples to enrich understanding. I have listened to it twice and now also bought the hard cover to dip in and out of and study sentence and paragraph structure to see how Julia delivered such a great message.
