William Thomas was born in Alexandria, Virginia. He writes about American legal history, slavery, the South, and the Civil War. His new book is "A Question of Freedom: The Families Who Challenged Slavery from the Nation's Founding to the Civil War" (Yale University Press, 2020). Thomas is also co-producing a series of animated historical films with Salt Marsh Productions. The first of these features the story of Ann 'Anna' Williams, and her successful freedom suit in Washington, D.C. These films are available at www.animatinghistory.com. He has been a Guggenheim Fellow and a Lincoln Prize Finalist.
