Lisa Aronson Fontes, Ph.D. is a pioneering author, speaker and researcher on topics related to abuse in families and workplaces. She also serves as an expert witness in criminal and family court, mostly on topic related to domestic abuse and child custody. Her work inspires professionals and students in social work, psychology, criminal justice, medicine and the law. She speaks Spanish and Portuguese and has conducted psychotherapy and research in these languages as well as English. She is a leader in the field of cultural competence for professionals who work with diverse populations--winning the Cultural Competence Award of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children (APSAC). Her expertise includes custody forensic interviewing, sexual abuse, coercive control in couples, physical abuse, corporal punishment, statutory rape, suicide, interpreting, ethics, culturally competent research and related issues. She has volunteered with Somali refugees and homeless children in Massachusetts. Dr. Fontes grew up in New York City and holds a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She also earned a master's degree from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and writes books, articles and chapters for professional and lay audiences.
