A C6/C7 quadriplegic freelance writer/photographer sees the world from a slightly different perspective, and perhaps that's been my edge. I've enjoyed creating 100+ magazine bylines through the years, penning a Knight-Ridder syndicated Sunday column called "Disabled in America" based in the Detroit Free Press, authoring three "Stick Foster" mystery novels published in hardback by Walker and Company and in paperback by Vivisphere, co-writing a self-help book called GETTING REAL: The Road to Personal Redemption with Dick Todd, and, most recently, writing a contemporary novel called The Ghostwalker File, which morphed into a heart-warming series about community. I'm 67 now, and liked to think of myself as retired here in South Florida, but now I'm not sure writers can ever truly retire. In 2011, my fiction muse flew back from whatever island it retired to and forced me to write The Ghostwalker File, a warm and very human novel about the life of one John D. Ghostwalker, who, as a newborn baby, was dropped off at the entrance to the Miccosukee Indian Museum Village in the Everglades just west of Miami. After being adopted by the tribe, lovingly raised by a conglomeration of Native American tribal families, John grows up to be a highly talented architect and an unusually quirky human being who creates his own private sanctuaries on other peoples' properties. John's journey of self-discovery has provided me with months of enjoyment, and debuted in 2012. Book Two in the Ghostwalker Tribe Series, The I.M.P. Master, became available in 2016, and Book Three is due out in 2017. To say that I fell in love with the community of characters I discovered in and around John Ghostwalker would be an understatement! Also, I published four children's tales in a series called The Grandfather and Grandmother Bear Stories. I adore traditional Native American "animal stories" and/or "lodge fire stories," and my attempts to emulate this amazing genre was published in 2012. I read to my daughter every night when she was little (my favorite part of every day!), and as she grew up, we began reading to each other. This used to be a common American family pastime, and happily, today, my daughter reads to my five grandchildren. The Native American oral tradition saw the elders gathering all the children together around the lodge fire, and in the case of War Eagle, back in the early 1900's, they were told animal stories by the most important adult in their tribe's life. And he never talked down to them. They learned the history of their people in the language of their people, and the animal stories taught them (in a non-threatening way) how to grow up to be good human beings. I am old, and our society is moving at a faster pace then ever, but I'm publishing these stories in hopes that there will always be adults out there who love reading to children. Sure, children can read and enjoy my Grandfather and Grandmother Bear Stories by themselves, but some things are just better when they are shared. Another "surprise" book, The Big God Theory: A Layman's Journey in the American Christian Church, is also available from Amazon. It's a look at the "American Jesus" I grew up with, and how I found myself pondering a Divine Source not so easily contained in a small white denominational box. By-the-way, I don't know about all you non-disabled folks, but I LOVE my Kindle reader! Turning pages almost effortlessly and carrying dozens of books around on my person were never the norm for me before, so what's not to love?
