Jim Larison earned his doctorate in ecology from Cornell University and his master’s degree in film from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He served on the faculty of Oregon State University as a teacher, research scientist, and administrator. He has spent much of his life studying alpine ecosystems and has written extensively on the effects of heavy metals on White-tailed Ptarmigan populations in the Rocky Mountains. For much of that same period of time, he also produced, photographed, and wrote more than thirty environmental films, most for the National Geographic Society, PBS, and The Discovery Channel. JIm, together with his wife Elaine and their two sons John and Ted, traveled the world on assignment, living in the wilderness, climbing more than 20 ice-covered mountains, and diving in most of the world’s oceans. The Larison’s films have won more than 40 international awards, including the Isaak Walton Conservation Award, the Wildlife Society’s Wildlife Conservation Award, the Grand Award from the Council for the Advancement of Education, four individual awards from the Outdoor Writers’ Association of America, a Gold and two Silver Ahres from the Berlin International Film Festival, the Silver Tusker at the International Wildlife Film Academy, and the Albrecht Durer Bronze at the Budapest Film Festival.
