MG(Ret) Ira A. Hunt Jr. is a 1945 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy. He later taught at both West Point and the Naval Academy. Returning to troop duty in Germany his battalion soldiers set a European tank gunnery qualification record. In 1966 he was assigned to the Office of the Secretary of Defense where he was the action officer for the relocation of America troops in Europe, an exercise that Secretary McNamara cited as his most satisfactory accomplishment. In the Vietnam conflict he was both Chief of Staff and a Brigade Commander in the 9th Infantry Division where his troops called him “Rice Paddy Daddy”. Subsequently, he had staff responsibility for the operations of the Army’s Schools and Training Centers. He returned to Southeast Asia as Deputy Commander, USSAG overseeing the wars in South Vietnam and Cambodia and the evacuations of Phnom Penh and Saigon. His last assignment prior to retiring in 1978 was as Director of Battlefield Systems Integration. General Hunt’s awards and decorations include: The Distinguished Service Medal with OLC; Silver Star with OLC; Legion of Merit with 3 OLCs; Distinguished Flying Cross; Soldiers Medal; Bronze Star Medal with 3 OLCs, one with V Device; Air Medal with 14 OLCs; Army Commendation Medal with OLC; Purple Heart with OLC; Combat Infantry Badge; Parachutist Badge, and Foreign Decorations
