I write history, fiction, plays, and occasionally poetry. I use my legal name, Henry Butterfield Ryan, for history, and my nickname, Duke Ryan, for everything else. I am a retired American diplomat who served in Brazil, Norway, Australia, and--are you ready--Harvard, plus having various Washington assignments. After my year at Harvard, i served in Oslo, and then took leave from the government to spend three years earning a PhD in history at Trinity College, Cambridge. Next, I returned to the diplomatic service, working in Washington and then Australia, my last post. After my retirement I spent a term doing research at St. Antony's College and then nine months as a visiting fellow at Clare Hall, Cambridge. The time at Clare Hall earned me a marvelous privilege--I became a Life Member, which means that I can return any time for any amount of time. The college provides housing for me and my wife, Patricia, if it can (not free, you understand, but reasonably priced). Otherwise, I find our own accommodations in the community, but I can always take part in anything that goes on in the College and am also a member of the University. I have spent more than 20 summers at Clare Hall, had a marvelous and stimulating time, and done a huge amount of writing. At the moment, I am mainly focused on plays. Over the years, I have had productions at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Questors Theatre in London; the Washington, DC, Fringe Festival, and various other locations in Washington. I have also held staged readings at several Cambridge Colleges. My wife and I met at an art fair in Chicago, where I grew up and where I was working in the publishing business before going into the diplomatic service. We have a grown son who has worked at various government jobs, including several years in the White House. I have two granddaughters, 16 years apart (it's a long story) and have lived in Washington since I returned from being a visiting fellow at Clare Hall. I spend most of my time writing, although recently I decided to begin to brush up my French. I am long overdue for a visit to Paris.
