Throughout his life, Gene has loved stories of all kinds. Some of the first concerned the Pendergast era. These ranged from tales of outrageous civic corruption to blatant mob violence. And some of these stories were even about members of his own family. During the Depression, his maternal grandfather lost the family farm in the Ozarks. Moving to Kansas City, he moonlighted as a “mule” for local bootleggers, to make ends meet. Wearing an overcoat with multiple, pint-sized interior pockets, he would take the streetcar to the gin mills of Kansas City, Missouri. There, he would load up for the return trip to KCK where he would be rewarded handsomely. These family tales created a thirst for story. And Gene’s taste was wide-ranging from the Bible to The Maltese Falcon, from The Lord of the Rings to The Brothers Karamazov. This love of story led him to study literature and the folktale at university. Later, while pursuing a Ph.D. in English, he became a teaching assistant in a comparative-literature great-books program. This fostered an enduring appreciation for the classics. Having to leave graduate school before completing his degree, because of the need to feed his young and growing family, Gene taught classes in the detective story, fantasy, and science fiction at a community college in Northwest Kansas. Switching careers, he completed his J.D. After which, he joined a national law firm where he specialized in identifying and preparing expert witnesses for complex litigation. During this time, Gene and his family spent nearly a decade in London where he served as a consultant in U.S. law. Gene now lives and writes in Kansas City, Missouri.
