An engineering graduate of MIT, I spent the first eight years of my career conducting research and tactical studies in anti-submarine warfare for the U.S. Navy. I am a co-founder of The Cadmus Group, Inc., www.cadmusgroup.com, which employs 500 people doing program development, evaluation, and policy research in environmental protection, energy efficiency, sustainable development, climate change, and homeland security. In preparation for With Their Bare Hands, I spent seventeen years combing archives in Washington, Baltimore, Paris, West Point, and Carlisle, Pennsylvania. I also researched this most bloody and fiercely contested battle on the battlefield itself, finding and standing in the very trench from which my grandfather, Corporal Oscar Lubchansky of the 313th Infantry Regiment, attacked up the slope of Montfaucon in 1918.
