I 1920’ernes Berlin forelsker teaterinstruktøren Detlef Sierck sig i skuespillerinden Lydia. Tiden er præget af nazismens fremmarch og da Detlef begynder at bevæge sig fra teatret til filmen, kommer han i kontakt med nazitoppen.
