In Legends of Saints and Martyrs, Joseph McCabe turns a sharp historical eye on one of Christianity’s most cherished traditions: the heroic age of persecution. With biting wit and relentless skepticism, he examines the legends of early saints and martyrs, arguing that many were not preserved...

This book tells the stories of young saints who lived — and often died — with heroic faith. From Agnes of Rome to Charles Lwanga, Joan of Arc to Dominic Savio, these inspiring lives show that holiness is possible at any age. Through courage, sacrifice, and trust in God, these boys and girls, peasants and kings, answered Christ’s call and became examples of virtue for all generations.

Gustave Flaubert was born on 12th December 1821 in Rouen, in Normandy, France. In September 1849, Flaubert completed ‘The Temptation of Saint Anthony’. A long journey to the Middle East brought encounters with both female and male prostitutes and a case of syphilis caught in Beirut. On his return he began ‘Madame Bovary’, a work he would take 5 years to complete. He toiled on his unfinished ‘Bouvard et Pécuchet’ but did complete ‘Three Tales’ in 1877, from which ‘The Legend of Saint Julian the Hospitaller’ is taken.

"The Legend of Saint Julian the Hospitalier" is a short story by French writer Gustave Flaubert, one of the great masters of literary style and aesthetics. Saint Julian is predicted at birth to do great things, but a growing hatred takes root in him, leading him to seek a way to escape a destiny which seems more and more likely to be terrible. "The Legend of Saint Julian the Hospitalier" is an inspiring tale of perseverance and humility, one of Flaubert's most touching short stories with a religious theme.
