Political Founding

This book provides a complete overview of the American Founders' political theory, covering natural rights, natural law, state of nature, social compact, consent, and the policy implications of these ideas. The book is intended as a response to the current scholarly consensus, which holds that the Founders' political thought is best understood as an amalgam of liberalism, republicanism, and perhaps other traditions.

America wasn’t founded. It was forged in smoke, sabotage, and the kind of silence that doesn’t beg for credit. The Boston Tea Party was a cover. Beneath wigs and warpaint, rebels moved Turkish opium through the harbor and crossed names off ledgers. Some were loyalists. Some weren’t. Nobody asked twice. In the smoke-filled port cities of rebellion, a syndicate formed. Part secret society, part shadow state, it traded liberty like cargo and laundered loyalty through blood. Washington held the center. Franklin read every cipher twice.

The Constitution of the United States is the supreme law of the United States of America. It superseded the Articles of Confederation, the nation's first constitution, in 1789. Originally comprising seven articles, it delineates the national frame and constraints of government.

In 1787, delegates from the recently independent 13 colonies met in Philadelphia to try to forge a new, stronger constitution. That summer, the representatives ironed out a document that had pluses and minuses for all involved, a point noted by Ben Franklin in explaining why he assented to it at the end of the process.

Few institutions have been more ingeniously designed than the U.S. federal government via the Constitution in 1787. This auspicious beginning more than two centuries ago helps explain why the U.S. remains a magnet for opportunity seekers, students, entrepreneurs, dissidents, and persecuted believers. Yet for decades now, America’s federal government has been underperforming. In an era of substantial political fermentation and debate, rediscovering and re-applying American Republicanism represents the best path forward for the United States.
