Som barn hadde førstebetjent Dave Robicheaux mareritt om de døde sjøfolkene. Som student kom han tilfeldigvis over vraket av en av båtene mens han dykket. Det er denne hendelsen som mange år senere – i et New Orleans på vei mot tusenårsriket – setter både hans og andres liv i fare. Sonnier-familien har en mørk og dyster bakgrunn, og Dave Robicheaux kjenner de fleste av hemmelighetene deres. Men selv han blir rystet når fortidens mudder kommer opp til overflaten, forlengst tilbaketrengte demoner blir synlige igjen, og vold og drap med økende hyppighet oppsøker de tre Sonnier-søsknene, som han har kjent fra de var barn. Det er en veritabel heksegryte Dave Robicheaux med velkjent stahet stikker hånden ned i, sterkere krydret enn i cajun-sjappene i New Orleans՚ bakgater, med ingredienser som CIA, gangstervelde og Ku Klux Klan.
