Middle Ages Spain

Drawing from both Christian and Islamic sources, Reconquest and Crusade in Medieval Spain demonstrates that the clash of arms between Christians and Muslims in the Iberian peninsula that began in the early eighth century was transformed into a crusade by the papacy during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Successive popes accorded to Christian warriors willing to participate in the peninsular wars against Islam the same crusading benefits offered to those going to the Holy Land.

The Basques live in a modestly small, triangular-shaped country that straddles the farthest northeastern portion of Spain and the southeastern portion of France. While some live outside this area today, many still call this region home. These hardy people have dwelt in the foothills of the jagged Pyrenees Mountains since prehistoric times, and they’re still there to this day.  

Los vascos viven en una porción de los Pirineos en el extremo suroeste de Francia y al otro lado de la cordillera en el centro-norte de España, centrados en las ciudades de Pamplona y Donostia. Mientras que algunos viven fuera de esta área actualmente, muchos todavía llaman a esta región su hogar. Estas resistentes personas han vivido en las estribaciones de las escarpadas montañas de los Pirineos desde tiempos prehistóricos, y siguen allí hasta hoy.
