Peu de temps avant la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, une œuvre majeure de la Renaissance italienne, "Le Portrait d'un jeune homme" de Raphaël, disparaît du musée de Cracovie. De nos jours, à Varsovie : le gouvernement polonais, après avoir découvert où se trouve la célèbre peinture, envoie une équipe spéciale pour rapatrier le tableau en Pologne : une haute fonctionnaire du ministère des Affaires étrangères, un marchand d'art, un officier des services spéciaux à la retraite et une voleuse suédoise libérée de prison uniquement pour cette mission.

All eyes are on famous prosecutor Teodor Szacki when he investigates a skeleton discovered at a construction site in the idyllic Polish city of Olsztyn. Old bones come as no shock to anyone in this part of Poland, but it turns out these remains are fresh, the flesh chemically removed. Szacki questions the dead man's wife, only to be left with a suspicion she's hiding something. Then another victim surfaces - a violent husband, alive but maimed - giving rise to a theory: someone's targeting domestic abusers.
