Filmmaker Tom Opre spent over three years documenting a remote Zambian community led by a woman chief who took bold action against wildlife poaching to break the cycle of poverty. For generations, the people lived off the land and partnered with the safari hunting industry, which funded wildlife protection and brought income. But after a hunting ban in 2001–2002, poaching gangs took over. In just 15 years, once-abundant wildlife—including Africa’s Big Five—was decimated. No outfitter would invest in an empty concession. The people faced hopelessness.
