A man lies dying in a hospital in upstate Vermont. The nurses know only that he is an academic at a nearby university, but they have been instructed to call the FBI should anyone visit their patient. News of this suspected Russian illegal soon reaches MI5, where Liz Carlyle has been contacted by Mischa, a top secret source who is requesting a clandestine rendezvous in Berlin.
MI5 Intelligence Officer Liz Carlyle learns from one of her agents that suspicious meetings have been taking place at an Islamic bookshop. She feels instinctively that a terrorist cell is at work and when she reports this to Charles Wetherby, the Director of Counter Terrorism, a surveillance operation is immediately put into place. An attack seems imminent.
In 2012, in a Middle Eastern souk, CIA agent Miles Brookhaven was attacked. He was infiltrating rebel groups in the area and no one was certain if his cover had been blown or if the act was just an arbitrary attack. Now, Liz Carlyle and her Counter Terrorism unit in MI5 have been charged with the task of watching the international under-the-counter arms trade and British Intelligence forces have become increasingly concerned that extremist Al-Qaeda jihadis are building their power base ready to launch another attack.
Liz Carlyle has been transferred to Counter-Espionage, along with her research sidekick Peggy Kingsolving. Although the department has downsized since the end of the Cold War, there are still spies: including Russian spies who now keep an eye on the international financial community as well as the wealthy, influential Russian "oligarchs" in London. Liz is assigned to stop a Russian government plot to "silence" one of these oligarchs.
Geneva, 2012. When a Russian intelligence officer approaches MI5 with vital information about the imminent cyber-sabotage of an Anglo-American Defence programme, he refuses to talk to anyone but Liz Carlyle. But who is he, and what is his connection to the British agent? At a tracking station in Nevada, US Navy officers watch in horror as one of their unmanned drones plummets out of the sky. Is this a Russian plot to disable the West’s defences? Or is the threat coming from elsewhere?
MI5 officer Liz Carlyle is posted to Northern Ireland. From the moment she lands in Belfast, danger follows. She soon discovers that the peace process in the province is precarious. Then a source reports strange goings-on at a house on the Irish Sea owned by the Fraternity, an organisation Liz suspects of being a front for renegade former IRA men. Its head is Seamus Piggott, an Irish-American with a gun-running past.
When pirates attack a cargo ship off the Somalian coast and one of them is found to be a British-born Pakistani, MI5 Intelligence Officer Liz Carlyle is brought in to establish how and why a young British Muslim could go missing from his family in Birmingham and end up on board a pirate skiff in the Indian Ocean, armed with a Kalashnikov. After an undercover operative connected to the case turns up dead in a shipping office in Athens it looks like piracy may be the least of the Service’s problems...
MI5 Intelligence Officer Liz Carlyle is summoned to a meeting with her boss Charles Wetherby, head of the Service's Counter-Espionage Branch. His counterpart over at MI6 has received alarming intelligence from a high-placed Syrian source. The future of the whole of the Middle East is at stake and the deadline for action is drawing ever closer....
Following a gruelling operation in Paris, Liz Carlyle’s bosses post her to MI5’s counter-espionage desk, but they haven’t counted on the fallout from Putin’s incursions into the Ukraine. Liz needs to track down a Russian spy who has entered the UK before he completes his fatal mission. Meanwhile, the intelligence services are in the spotlight. In response to the debate raging around privacy and security, they hire Jasminder Kapoor, a controversial civil rights lawyer, to explain the issues to the public.
MI5 Intelligence Officer Liz Carlyle has received alarming intelligence from a source in Syria. A Middle East peace conference is planned to take place at Gleneagles in Scotland, and the Syrians have learned that two individuals are mounting an operation to disrupt the conference in a spectacular way, laying the blame at Syria's door. As the conference deadline draws ever closer, Liz discovers that the threat is far greater than she or anyone else could have imagined. But so many questions are still to be answered.
