But, perversely, without this surplus, we wouldn't be able to enjoy what is substantial and necessary. Indeed, without the surplus we wouldn't be able to identify what was the perfect amount.

We normally don’t have any time, but when we finally do, we lack energy. On those rare occasions when we have energy outside of work, it is restless and difficult to harness towards meaningful goals. Starting from the realization that meaningful time is worthless without energy, the concept of “timenergy” points to something we all lack: large energy-infused blocks of repeatable time throughout the week.

The concept of disparity has long been a topic of obsession and argument for philosophers but Slavoj Žižek would argue that what disparity and negativity could mean, might mean and should mean for us and our lives has never been more hotly debated. The essays in Zero Point ask how we distinguish defeat from disaster, and how we confront despair without collapsing into it - questions never more pertinent than the current moment in the wake of electoral victories for authoritarian populists and unceasing news of violent atrocities. The 'zero-point' of the title is ground level, rock bottom, the place to which one retreats and where one regroups.

Lo que estamos presenciando hoy es la mercantilización directa de nuestras experiencias: en el mercado compramos cada vez menos productos (objetos materiales) que queremos poseer, y adquirimos cada vez más experiencias de vida -experiencias de sexo, gastronomía, comunicación, consumo cultural, que forman parte de un estilo de vida -. No compramos productos por su utilidad ni tampoco como símbolos de estatus; los compramos para obtener la experiencia que nos brindan, los consumimos para hacer que nuestra vida sea más placentera y significativa.
