প্রেমেন্দ্র মিত্র, 1923 খ্রীষ্টাব্দের নভেম্বর মাসে ঢাকা থেকে কলকাতায় এসে গোবিন্দ ঘোষাল লেনের একটি মেসে থাকার সময় ঘরের জানলার ফাঁকে একটি পোস্টকার্ড আবিষ্কার করেন। চিঠিটা পড়তে পড়তে তার মনে দুটো গল্প আসে। সেই রাতেই গল্পদুটো লিখে পরদিন পাঠিয়ে দেন জনপ্রিয় পত্রিকা প্রবাসীতে। 1924 সালের মার্চে প্রবাসীতে 'শুধু কেরানী' আর এপ্রিল মাসে 'গোপনচারিণী' প্রকাশিত হয়, যদিও সেখানে তার নাম উল্লেখ করা ছিল না। সেই বছরেই কল্লোল পত্রিকায় 'সংক্রান্তি' নামে একটি গল্প বেরোয়। এরপর তার মিছিল এবং পাঁক নামে দুটি উপন্যাস বেরোয়।বৈপ্লবিক চেতনাসিক্ত মানবিকতা তার কবিতার প্রধান বৈশিষ্ট্য। এই
