As the summer sun beats down on the ancient town of Acitrezza, a folk festival plays out in the picturesque harbour. And then a world-famous critic is decapitated by one of the installations in the British Pavilion. A terrible accident, it seems, until a postcard is discovered in the victim's pocket: an image of Judith beheading Holofernes.

Venice, June 2020. The city has returned to the Venetians during a merciful pause in the Covid pandemic, and few overseas visitors are to be seen. Yet Dominic Vicari, a British private investigator haunted by loss, has travelled across Europe to the tiny island of San Francesco del Deserto. The ancient monastery there, it is said, was founded by St Francis himself in the 13th century. Its population now consists of five Franciscan brothers and three pilgrims on retreat. Or, rather, two pilgrims and a dead man.

Newlyweds Nathan Sutherland and Federica Ravagnan are looking forward to weeks of sunshine and relaxation on the island of Pellestrina, in a cottage belonging to Federica's late father, Elio. The weather is idyllic, the views across the lagoon are spectacular and the seafood is the best in Venice. Als britischer Ehrenkonsul in Venedig hat Nathan Sutherland nicht gerade den aufregendsten Job der Welt: Er schlägt sich mit verlorenen Pässen und Wegbeschreibungen herum. Gesellschaft leisten ihm seine grantige Katze und das Porträt Ihrer Majestät. Daneben genießt er das venezianische Leben: Aperol am Canale, Tramezzini in der Trattoria. Dann geschieht etwas Unvorhergesehenes: Ein Unbekannter spielt Nathan ein Päckchen zu: ein Buch mit augenscheinlich originalen Illustrationen des Künstlers Giovanni Bellini aus dem 15. Jahrhundert.
