It has been said that political corruption is as old as government itself. Yet, despite its timeless nature and its devastating impact on society, “political corruption” remains an elusive term that is difficult to define. In order to fully grasp its impact on government and society as a whole, it is critical to first have at least a cursory understanding of what corruption is and how it is measured, using several infamous instances of corruption in Rhode Island politics as its framework.

Everyone, it seems, missed the most obvious signs: A childhood filled with poverty, neglect, drugs, pornography, physical, mental, and sexual abuse will invariably lead to an adulthood full of greed, lust and violence. No one, however, could have predicted the terror that Reginald and Jonathan Carr, two brothers in Kansas, would inflict on seven unsuspecting men and women over nine days in December 2000.

Using examples of government corruption from one of the most troubled US states, the authors warn that until all citizens unite in opposition to, and the exposing of, all government corruption, nothing in our society will change, and our government of the people, by the people, and for the people will continue to hurt the people it was intended to help.

The brother’s crime spree included assault, car-jacking, kidnapping, robbery, rape, torture and murder. Their victims, all upstanding members of the Wichita community, were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
