Home is where the horror is... Jilted thriller writer Lady Violet Thorn has withdrawn to the Suffolk market town of Montford with two servants and her leading character, the adventuress Ruby Gibson, for company. Violet’s peace is disturbed when a stranger asks her for help, claiming that a friend is being kept prisoner in her own home. Her visitor seems so afraid that Violet, despite her scepticism, is persuaded to investigate.

Inspector Betty Church - one of the few female officers on the force - has arrived from London to fill a vacancy at Sackwater police station. But Betty isn't new here. This is the place she grew up. Time ticks slowly in Sackwater. Having solved the case of the missing buttons, Betty's called to the train station to investigate a missing bench. But though there's no bench, there is a body. December, 1939. Having solved the case of the Suffolk Vampire, Inspector Betty Church and her colleagues at Sackwater Police Station have settled back down to business. There's the elderly Mr Fern, who keeps losing his slippers, Sylvia Satin's 13th birthday party to attend and the scintillating case of the missing bookmark to solve. Though peace and quiet are all well and good, Betty soon finds herself longing for some cold-blooded murder.

1914: Sixteen-year-old Etterly, running from something, hides inside the trunk of a tree and disappears. The police search but find no trace. Her family and friends wrack their brains but come up with nothing. And so slowly life returns to normal. The hole in the tree is boarded up, and the village of Sackwater moves on. Only Etterly's best friend, Betty, clings to hope, insisting she can hear her friend calling for help. 1940: A skeleton is discovered buried in the woods....

Sa dernière enquête a mené un homme innocent à la potence... Autant dire que le détective Sydney Grice n'est plus vraiment en odeur de sainteté à Londres. Boudé par ses clients, le "plus grand détective de tout l'empire britannique" dépérit. March Middelton, son excentrique acolyte du "sexe faible", commence à sérieusement s'inquiéter. Jusqu'à ce qu'un individu, membre de l'effrayant "Club du dernier survivant", fasse appel aux services de Sydney... et ait l'impudence de passer de vie à trépas dans son salon !

Londres 1892. Une femme est sauvagement assassinée dans le quartier pauvre de Whitechapel. Désemparée par l'inefficacité de la police, la mère de la victime engage Sidney Grice, le plus célèbre détective privé de Londres. D'une intelligence acérée, l'homme est d'une efficacité redoutable. Il pense que le "sexe faible" n'a pas sa place dans un cabinet de détective, mais il fait tout de même appel à March Middleton, une jeune femme excentrique un peu trop portée sur le gin, pour l'assister. L'irrésistible duo mène l'enquête et découvre que le mystérieux meurtre n'était que le premier d'une sinistre série.
