Tera never thought paying attention in her deathriser classes was a big deal. After flunking her midterms, her mom finally put her foot down and grounds Tera. That doesn't stop her from sneaking out to Summercloud Fair one night with her friends. In a rush to beat her parents home the night of the fair, Tera witnesses the incineration of the kingdom's greatest wizard. Thinking she's about to become a hero, she attempts a basic resurrection spell from class, completely forgetting one of the most important rules—there needs to be a body.

Raine Velora and the exile town system have taken everything from Eos. After a heartbreaking loss, Eos was pushed to her breaking point. Now, she’s ready to do whatever it takes to bring Raine down and reinstate the prison system. Faced with loyalists in the cities, sandstorms in the desert, and the horrors in her head, Eos sets out to spread the word about the corruption of the New Territory. With the support of the exiles, Eos leads the revolution, but Raine and her officials aren’t the only threat in her path.

It wasn’t until Tallis tried REM for the first time that he realized he wasn’t happy. The average person might stop sometimes to smell the flowers, but Tallis was the kind of person who would even admire the weeds. To him, life itself was beautiful. While anyone else would see the city of Neuvale as dirty and chaotic, Tallis adored the buzz of life and the stunning sights around every corner. He was content, even though his love life was complicated, his professional life had plateaued, and his personal life would put just about anyone to sleep.

Eos and Zane agreed that, after finding the Skeleton Key, they would seek out the rumored city of free exiles: Fortitude. When the two venture through the New Territory and beyond its borders, they encounter more terrifying elements of the exile town system than they ever thought possible. Seeking out the city with the purple light, Eos and Zane recruit escaped exiles, who join them as they encounter dangerous exiles, familiar faces, and careless party-goers.

After a world war left the country in ruins, the survivors regrouped, creating four cities. With the population lower than ever, the prison system became impossible to maintain, so the city officials developed the Exile Town System...Avid - a literal dump for the thieves, Bellicose - caverns for the violent, Clamorite - mountains for the unruly, Delaisse - factories for the addicts and vandals, and Equivox - a lake for the liars.
