Il rock and roll nasce negli anni '50. La storia del rock and roll inizia da molto lontano. Parte dal blues e dal country and western, arriva dopo tanti anni al rhythm and blues e al country, da considerare i sottogeneri e i generi derivati. Un primo impatto si è avuto con il boogie-woogie, una musica per piano che influenzò molti musicisti, il boogie-woogie verrà suonato e ballato in tutti gli Stati Uniti.
