Può esserci un lieto fine per un'anima dannata? Ora che finalmente Player 2511 non è più una minaccia, non dovrebbero esserci ulteriori ostacoli alla storia tra Selene e Neil. Appena giunta a New York per tentare di ricucire il rapporto con suo padre, Selene si ritrova a vivere in una villa da capogiro con lui, la sua nuova compagna e i tre figli di lei. Il maggiore è Neil, un ragazzo affascinante, enigmatico e perennemente in lotta contro un passato oscuro che non gli dà tregua. Come una falena attratta dalla luce, Selene si sente calamitata verso Neil e i mostri che gli gravitano attorno, rendendolo tormentato e ostile all'amore.

Dopo essere sopravvissuta a stento all'attacco di Player 2511, Selene decide di tornare a Detroit con la madre per riprendere le redini della propria vita e tentare di dimenticare Neil, i suoi occhi dorati e il suo atteggiamento contraddittorio. Nonostante ormai si sia resa conto di provare sentimenti profondi per lui, la ragazza ha infatti compreso che Neil non è in grado di lasciarsi amare da nessuno, tanto meno da lei, e che la sua psiche è segnata da cicatrici indelebili che non gli permettono di vivere una vita normale.
