The Turn of the Screw is an 1898 horror novella by Henry James that first appeared in serial format in Collier's Weekly magazine. Classified as both Gothic fiction and a ghost story, the novella focuses on a governess who, caring for two children at a remote estate, becomes convinced that the grounds are haunted. A cornerstone text of academics who subscribed to New Criticism, the novella has had differing interpretations, often mutually exclusive. Daisy Miller is a young American girl travelling Europe with her mother and younger brother. While in Vevey, Switzerland, she becomes acquainted with Frederick Winterbourne, an idle expatriate, of well-to-do Americans. Winterbourne, who observes and critiques young Daisy through their brief acquaintanceship, is infatuated with her irreverent behavior. Daisy flaunts society's rules and uncompromising standards; she is charming, spontaneous, and unpretentious, and her audacity shocks the Europeans, who consider her an uncultivated flirt. The sophisticated Winterbourne remains smitten with Daisy, but his classical values stand in his way.

What Maisie Knew was first published as a serial in the Chap Book and (revised and abridged) in the New Review in 1897 and then as a book later in the same year. The story of the sensitive daughter of divorced and irresponsible parents, What Maisie Knew has great contemporary relevance as an unflinching account of a wildly dysfunctional family. The book is also a masterly technical achievement by James, as it follows the title character from earliest childhood to precocious maturity.

Ein anonymer Ich-Erzähler versucht als Redakteur eines Käseblattes etwas journalistisches Niveau einzubringen und sieht bei seinem Besuch des unbekannten Autoren Neil Paraday eine goldene Gelegenheit am Horizont aufblitzen. Er liest einen Auszug aus einem unveröffentlichten Manuskript und erkennt das literarische Genie des Verfassers. Er gewinnt das Vertrauen von Paraday und versucht dessen aufgehenden Stern so gut es geht von den Geiern der Massenmedien und den fanatischen Fans zu beschützen. Dies gelingt ihm nur bedingt.

John Marcher und May Bartram sind seit der Jugend befreundet. Für John ist May die einzige Person, die ihn wirklich versteht. The story has to do not only with Roderick's growth as an artist and the problems it brings, but also as a man susceptible to his new environment, and indeed his occasional rivalries with his American friend and patron.
