Quizá sea ésta la novela de aventuras más leída de la historia de la literatura. Un ilusionado joven originario de Gascuña, región francesa limítrofe con España, va a París con una carta de recomendación para convertirse en un mosquetero del rey. Su nombre es D’Artagnan. Nada más empezar su viaje debe desafiar a un misterioso caballero acompañado por una bella y misteriosa dama. En el momento que llega a París es retado a duelo por 3 mosqueteros Athos, Portos y Aramis, pero justo antes del momento en que van a empezar a batirse, les interrumpe la guardia del cardenal Richelieu.

Volume Seven of Alexander' Dumas' catalogue of crime features three colourful historical figures. Albanian tyrant Ali Pacha (or Pasha) was a brigand who later became an operative of the Ottoman empire. After extending his territory to include large areas of Greece and Macedonia, and aspiring to become an independent leader, he attracted the enmity of the Sultan and was declared a rebel. He died in battle at the age of 80.

In Volume Four, Dumas relates the 1819 murder of German dramatist August von Kotzebue by Karl Ludwig Sand, the campaign to destroy Father Urbain Grandier in 1634, who was successfully convicted of witchcraft and put to a brutal death, and the consequences of the amorous relationship between the prince of Brancaleone and Nisida.

This volume relates the stories of the Borgias and the Cenci. The former, a family of Spanish adventurers, came to dominate the Italian peninsula, and, when Rodergio Borgia became Pope Alexander VI, the world of Christendom, in the late 15th century. The Cenci was an aristocratic family, in which rampant sexual and domestic abuse led to murder and very public execution.

In the second entry of his compilation of the most notorious deeds in European history at his point in time, Alexandre Dumas composes an essay covering a span of nearly 300 years of strife between the Catholics and Protestants of Southern France. Dumas recounts numerous instances of bloody conflict, unruly mobs, assassination, and political turmoil as the Protestants of the region fight to live and worship as they choose and Catholics endeavor to suppress a dangerous threat to their hegemony.
