Es ist die Nacht zum 24. August 1572. Anlässlich der Hochzeit von Henri von Navarre mit Marguerite, der Schwester König Karl IX, sind Tausende von Hugenotten nach Paris gekommen. Doch Katharina von Medici, die Königinmutter, spinnt im Hintergrund die Fäden, und so wird diese Nacht zum blutigen Gemetzel an den Hugenotten. In diesem Durcheinander lernen sich die Edelmänner Hannibal de Coconnas und La Môle kennen, Katholik der eine, Hugenotte der andere. Nach anfänglicher Sympathie entbrannt ein großer Hass zwischen ihnen, der aber in tiefe Freundschaft umschlägt, nachdem sie im gleichen Zimmer von ihren Verletzungen gesund gepflegt werden. Und beide verlieben sich bis über beide Ohren.
