In October 1916, Conan Doyle announced in the journal light his conversion to spiritualism. During the last years of his life, he became the crusader of this movement that preaches salvation of humanity through science. Thus, from 1920 to 1923, he gave a series of lectures about spiritualism in Australia, in USA, and in Canada. He published his autobiography, Memories and Adventures in 1924 and opened a bookstore dedicated to spiritualism, The Psychic Bookshop in London, where he handled the editing of his own works.

L'ingénieur Victor Hatherley vient trouver le docteur Watson pour soigner son pouce, qui a été très violemment arraché par une machine. Il raconte qu'il a été engagé par un mystérieux inconnu, pour une grosse somme en liquide, afin de régler une presse hydraulique dans un lieu inconnu. Incité à s'enfuir par une jeune femme, il est resté parce qu'il avait besoin de l'argent promis. À l'intérieur de la presse, il s'est rendu compte qu'on l'utilisait malhonnêtement.

Sherlock Holmes est contacté par Robert Ferguson au sujet d'une affaire qui ressemble fort à une affaire de vampire : sa femme a récemment été surprise en train de mordre le cou de leur jeune enfant.
