Kent, que se niega a dejarse matar, logra tirarse al agua; desde allí, consigue subirse a una canoa, y empieza a remar alejándose a toda velocidad de la orilla. Uno de sus atacantes dice a los demás:- No os preocupéis; se dirige a la Llave del Dolor. De esa isla no ha vuelto nadie vivo.

Un joven periodista que trabaja para el Manhattan Illustrator se queja a un compañero de las exigencias de su jefe, al que llama el viejo gato capón, que además de hacerle trabajar todas las horas del día sólo le da reportajes tontos y vacíos. El último que le ha encargado tener listo para el día siguiente es sobre los animales del zoológico.

Unos investigadores descubren en tierras bretonas un cementerio lleno de calaveras, y encuentran el rastro de una antigua maldición que, según parece, fue hecha para intentar destruir a una familia. Hay un personaje del que nadie quiere hablar: el sacerdote negro, que perteneció a la familia maldita y murió en muy extrañas circunstancias.

Mientras pinta a la bella Tessie, el pintor contempla al trabajador de un cementerio que está enfrente de su estudio. Scott empieza a sentir como si, por solo mirarle, estuviera influenciando su pintura, que en vez de reflejar una sonrosada y lozana Tessie, empieza a mostrarla con la piel pálida y enfermiza. Tessie le cuenta que tiene un sueño recurrente sobre un coche fúnebre que conduce el trabajador del cementerio, y en el ataúd está... Pero el extraño símbolo amarillo da a entender que, posiblemente, no fue un sueño.

El protagonista de este relato visita la iglesia londinense de San Bernabé, y empieza a tener una sensación de miedo, que acaba descartando ante la belleza del templo. Empieza a escuchar el órgano, cuando de repente el organista se vuelve, le mira con una expresión de odio inimaginable, y después desaparece... ¡y, sin embargo, la música sigue sonando!Ya camino de su casa, intentando olvidar el absurdo episodio, siente un escalofrío cuando oye una voz salida de ninguna parte, de alguien que decía llamarse el Rey de Amarillo, susurrando a su alma.

El narrador empieza diciendo que quiere explicar todo lo que sabe de Yue-Laou y de Xin. Un poco más tarde se encuentra en una joyería con su amigo Godfrey. Mientras conversan se dan cuenta que una extraña criatura está saliendo del bolsillo de la chaqueta de Godfrey y asombrados especulan sobre su origen, pareciéndoles extraño que dios haya dado vida a un ser que parece inacabado.

Our own experiences are unique and personal to ourselves and of little help defining it for another.
