They were not wanted where they came from. They were not welcome anywhere. They were outcasts, rootless and friendless, until luck or destiny threw them together. A former Apache scout shunned by his tribe, an ex-Union Army major, a former Confederate captain, and two army deserters, all forced to band together to stay alive. That is, as long as they could avoid killing each other.

Society had turned its back on them, and they were only too happy to return the favor. They were the Outcasts, unwanted by their own people, with no one to rely on but themselves. Together they rode west, seeking a land where they could be free to live the way they wanted.

They were a rootless bunch, friendless and unwanted, shunned by everyone except each other. They were the Outcasts, a ragged group of men who made their own way through an unforgiving West. They knew what it was like to be hated and recognized injustice when they saw it. So when they saw an innocent black wrangler framed for a murder he didn't commit, it stuck in their craw.

First produced by the Negro Ensemble Company in 1969, this classic masterpiece by Academy Award nominee Lonne Elder III gives us the portrait of a Harlem family that dreams of a better life, but pursues it in tragic ways. Ceremonies opened the door for new generation of African American playwrights, August Wilson among them. NBC-TV called Elder’s dramatization of rituals "exciting drama, filled with meaningful insight and original comedy."

Chapters are transcripts of oral histories by 10 Elders about their recollections of the early days of fur trading, guns, and flu pandemic; dismay about the way oil and uranium discoveries and pipelines were handled on their land; and the emotional and economic fallout of the signing of Treaty 11.
