Im Gegensatz zum ersten Band, bei dem Spielkarten als durchgehendes Thema dienen, baut Carroll hier die Handlung des Buches rund um eine Schachpartie auf. Die Züge dieser Schachpartie werden zu Beginn des Buches präsentiert, die - mit einigen Ausnahmen - eine reguläre Partie darstellen. Ausnahmen sind: Weiß bewegt den König nicht aus einer Schachkonstellation; anstelle der Regel, dass Weiß und Schwarz abwechselnd ziehen, tritt die, dass Alice, die in der Partie die Rolle des weißen Damenbauers eingenommen hat, abwechselnd mit einer der beiden Farben am Zuge ist.

Eigentlich wollen Alice und ihre kleine Schwester Edith nur ihr Osternest im Garten suchen, als sie - tief in ihr Spiel versunken - alles um sich herum vergessen und irgendwann lachend im Gras liegen. Aufeinmal kommt ein Wind auf und der Kirschbaum über ihnen scheint sich zu drehen, wie ein großes Windrad, immer schneller und schneller, und bringt die beiden Mädchen schließlich ins Wunderland zurück. Hier begegnet Alice nach langer Zeit dem Hutmacher wieder, der ihr dabei hilft, ihren verwundeten Löwen zu heilen. Für Edith hat er einen ganz besonderen Luftballon aus Glitzer.
