Die Geschichte beschreibt die Entstehung und die Fahrt des damals modernen Dampfschiffs Delphin. Auftraggeber ist der Reeder Vincent Playfair. Im amerikanischen Bürgerkrieg ist es zu einer Seeblockade vor der Küste der Südstaaten gekommen. Die Blockade hat den Handel mit Baumwolle nahezu zum Erliegen gebracht. Der Onkel lässt sich Bedingungen nennen und inwieweit der Neffe diese erfüllen könne (Schiffstyp, Mannschaft, Bewaffnung).

Professor Lidenbrock, Hamburger Geologieprofessor und schrullige Kapazität, gerät durch Zufall in den Besitz einer verschlüsselten Handschrift des isländischen Alchimisten Arne Saknussemm aus dem 16. Jahrhundert. Ihre Botschaft: Steigt man hinab in den Krater des Sneffel-Vulkans auf Island, so gelangt man zum Mittelpunkt der Erde! Es beginnt eine phantastische Reise in eine frühgeschichtliche Zeit, mit unterirdischen Meeren, Kristallhöhlen, Sauriern - und einer ganz und gar verblüffenden Auflösung.

The novel describes their attempts not only to survive but also, with the aid of the scientific and technological know-how, to rebuild their world from the meager resources of the island. At the end, however, it is realized that Captain Nemo, from Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, has secretly been helping the settlers.
