Der Roman von Daniel Defoe beschreibt die seltsamen Abenteuer des Robinson Crusoe, der siebenundzwanzig Jahre auf einer unbewohnten Insel vor der amerikanischen Küste lebte, auf die er nach einem Schiffbruch verschlagen wurde. Robinson Crusoe ist der erste moderne englische Roman und gleichzeitig ein zeitloses Leitbild der Weltliteratur, das einen beispiellosen Einfluß auf die Romanliteratur ausgeübt hat.

En 1651, Robinson Crusoé quitte York, en Angleterre pour naviguer, contre la volonté de ses parents qui voulaient qu'il devienne avocat. Le navire est arraisonné par des pirates de Salé et Crusoé devient l'esclave d'un Maure. Il parvient à s'échapper sur un bateau et ne doit son salut qu'à un navire portugais qui passe au large de la côte ouest de l'Afrique. Arrivé au Brésil, Crusoé devient le propriétaire d'une plantation.

Sein Schiff zerschellt jedoch an einer Klippe und er strandet auf einer einsamen Insel. Das Notwendigste kann er aus dem Wrack bergen und richtet sich auf der Insel häuslich ein...

He sails to Africa to bring back more slaves but is shipwrecked on an uninhabited island. Everyone else is drowned. For more than twenty years, he lives alone. He learns to hunt and fish and make shelter.
