Als sich Scott Eccles wegen seiner merkwürdigen Erlebnisse der vergangenen Nacht hilfesuchend an Sherlock Holmes wendet, ahnt er noch nicht, dass die Polizei bereits nach ihm sucht. Es geht um Mord. Mord an einem Mann, der zum augenscheinlichen Zeitpunkt seines Todes noch quicklebendig gesehen worden ist. Das behauptet zumindest Mr. Eccles. Viele verwirrende Aspekte tauchen nach und nach auf, nur ein Motiv scheint daraus nicht greifbar. Bis Holmes eine bemerkenswerte Theorie aufstellt.

Die Zimmerwirtin Mrs. Warren sucht Sherlock Holmes auf, weil ihr neuer Mieter sich äußerst seltsam benimmt. Er verlässt sein Zimmer nie und kommuniziert nur über handgeschriebene Zettel mit ihr. Der Meisterdetektiv sieht zunächst keinen Grund, sich einzuschalten, schließlich stellt ein solches Verhalten keinen Straftatbestand dar. Als dann aber Mrs. Warrens Mann Opfer eines dubiosen Überfalls wird, beginnt er doch, Nachforschungen anzustellen, und stößt auf eine, der Mafia ähnlichen, Geheimorganisation, die das Leben der schönen Emilia Lucca und ihres Mannes bedroht.
