First published in 1923, Kahlil Gibran's book of 26 fables tells the story Al Mustafa, who speaks on a vast array of topics dealing with humanity.

After living in one city for 12 years, a prophet is about to board a ship which will carry him home. He is stopped by the people of the city, who ask him for his insights into life. This collection of three stories was originally published in 1908 in Arabic under the title Al-Arwah Al-Mutamarridah. The English translation was first published in 1911. All are set in Lebanon, where the author spent the first 12 years of his life, and explore various aspects of love relationships.
