Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831-1891) is best known for her major role in the development of Theosophy, a syncretic religious philosophy the principles of which underlie the New Age philosophy of today. The original version of Nightmare Tales consisted of the last five stories in this recording and was published in 1892, shortly after the author's death. An expanded edition incorporating four earlier stories was published in 1907.

The Raven Edition of the works of Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) presents his entire literary output in five volumes. Volume Three contains The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket, Poe's longest work, as well as six stories. The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym is Poe's only complete novel. It describes the adventures of a young stowaway on a whaling ship, and includes incidences of shipwreck, mutiny, and capture by hostile tribes.

Devil Stories - Twenty tales of the demonic selected and edited by Maximilian J. Rudwin. The Devil is an old character in literature. Perhaps he is as old as literature itself. He is encountered in the story of the paradisiacal sojourn of our first ancestors, and from that day on, Satan has appeared unfailingly, in various forms and with various functions, in all the literatures of the world.

Anna Katherine Green (1846-1935) was one of the first writers of detective fiction in America and has been called “the mother of the detective novel”. Her style would influence other writers such as Agatha Christie and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The Doctor, His Wife and the Clock is the sixth title in her mystery series and is more a novelette compared to her other books. The story features one of her reoccurring characters, Ebenezer Gryce, who is called in to find out who killed a well-loved and respected citizen in a small community where he had no enemies to speak of.

Eugene Field was well known for his light hearted children’s poems which included, “Wynken, Blynken and Nod”, “The Gingham Dog and the Calico Cat”, and the “Dinky Bird”, as well humorous quips that he wrote while working at the Chicago Daily News. Field also published the above mentioned collection of short stories which has a diversity of settings but all illustrate beautifully the essence of faith and love with warmth, humor and sentimentality. Frank Wedekind (1864-1918) was the most controversial dramatist of his age. Most of his work focuses on the ubiquity and inevitably corrupting influence of sexual attraction. His most famous plays are the two that depict the rise, fall, and eventual gruesome death of the vampish Lulu, who, in Wedekind’s presentation, became a ghastly parody of Goethe’s “Eternal Feminine”. The first of the plays is Earth Spirit, in which Lulu marries and survives three husbands, only to face prosecution for the shooting of the third.

After the death of their father, Oedipus, Antigone and Ismene return to Thebes. The ruler is their unyielding uncle by marriage, Creon, who assumed command after the death of the sons of Oedipus, Eteocles, and Polynices in a fratricidal struggle to take control of the city. Creon has the body of one brother buried with full civic honors but forbids the burial of the body of the other, whom he regards as a traitor. Antigone's challenge to Creon's decree, which she considers unjust, results in the extinction of the family line of Oedipus.

Wells had a keen interest in the political and social issues of his day, one of the most significant of which was the outbreak of the First World War. This book, written in 1916, presents the story of Mr Britling, a political commentator, living in comfortable security in his country estate at Matchings Easy, in Essex. He entertains a varied assembly of guests, including Mr Direck, an American journalist, and Herr Heinrich, a German philology student who acts as a family tutor, and the general atmosphere is a hectic social whirl.

In a public debate held at the Manhattan Opera House, Clarence Darrow argued that not one of the 19 men under sentence of death at Sing Sing Prison would have been convicted if they could have afforded good attorneys. He was opposed by Judge Alfred J. Talley of General Sessions, who argued for the retention of the death penalty for murder. The debate commenced with an address by Lewis Lawes, who was the warden at Sing Sing.

In order to prevent a war between two neighboring groups, Ozma and Dorothy travel to a remote corner of Oz to lend their wisdom and their aid. Despite their good intentions, the Skeezers and the Flatheads are determined to have their war and imprison the two girls in an enclosed underwater city.

Cap'n Bill and a little girl named Trot are out in their rowboat when a whirlpool capsizes their craft. Finding themselves in an underwater cave, they meet up with an Ork. Further along their journey, they run into Button-Bright, the little boy from The Road to Oz, who has seemingly lost his way once again. The group learns of the unjust behavior of King Krewl, who has cut off Jinxland from the rest of Oz, and how the rightful king's daughter, Gloria, is being forced to marry old Googly-Goo, despite her being in love with Pon, the gardener's son.

This coming-of-age novel explores themes including religious skepticism, socialism, ennui, English society, sexual relationships, and metaphysics, as George searches for an ideal to which he can devote his life. Like all Wells’s novels, Tono-Bungay abounds with social critique.

Upon waking up in the Emerald City, Dorothy discovers that Princess Ozma is missing. In Quadling Country, Glinda finds that her magical Great Book of Records is also missing.
