This tale, published in 1828, is based on The Story of an Apparition, a ghost story published in Blackwood's 10 years earlier by an author identified only as A. B. Sir Walter Scott took that rather flimsy story and turned into a masterful tale of the supernatural.

The Norman-Saxon conflict is vividly described with battle scenes, medieval pageantry, and romantic escapades. The hero Sir Wilfred Ivanhoe, the lovely brave Jewess Rebecca, Richard the Lion-Hearted, and Robin Hood and his merry band are just a few of the chivalrous characters.

El cuento sucede en un castillo de un rico terrateniente, a donde ha llegado sin así planearlo un viejo amigo, al que no veía hacia mucho, el general Browne, recién llegado de América, en donde había participado en la guerra con Estados Unidos, camino a algún lugar se decide a visitar el Castillo que le ha llamado la atención, y se encuentra con su amigo, que le invita a hospedarse con él, ya que está celebrando una fiesta con muchos visitantes, pero no tiene para él más que una recámara alejada de la casa, a la que llaman "La cámara de los tapices".
