This tale, published in 1828, is based on The Story of an Apparition, a ghost story published in Blackwood's 10 years earlier by an author identified only as A. B. Sir Walter Scott took that rather flimsy story and turned into a masterful tale of the supernatural.

The Norman-Saxon conflict is vividly described with battle scenes, medieval pageantry, and romantic escapades. The hero Sir Wilfred Ivanhoe, the lovely brave Jewess Rebecca, Richard the Lion-Hearted, and Robin Hood and his merry band are just a few of the chivalrous characters.

Publié en décembre 1819 en Angleterre (et début 1820 en France), Ivanhoé de Walter Scott est un énorme succès populaire. Traduit en de nombreuses langues, le livre lance Scott et la vogue du roman historique dans toute l'Europe. L'histoire se déroule en 1194 dans l'Angleterre XII siècle, ou les tensions entre Saxons et Normands sont à leur comble. Le roi Richard Coeur-de-Lion rentre de captivité alors que son frère Jean sans Terre essaie de lui usurper le trône.

Classico intramontabile scritto dal romanziere e poeta scozzese Sir Walter Scott (1771/1832), Ivanhoe fu pubblicato nel 1819 riscuotendo subito un enorme successo di pubblico. Scrittore romantico e non privo di humour, Scott si può considerare l’iniziatore di un genere letterario, quello del romanzo storico. Vari scrittori si sono ispirati all’opera di Scott e tra loro, per citarne solo alcuni, Aleksandr Puškin, Mark Twain, Victor Hugo, Alessandro Manzoni e Alexandre Dumas.
