Vier junge Auswanderer geben nicht auf – sie kämpfen für ihr Glück und den Erhalt des Morning Herald. Amerika 1899: Seit einem tragischen Zerwürfnis haben die junge Auswanderin Marga und ihre Cousine Rosie kein Wort miteinander gesprochen. Marga arbeitet mittlerweile als Journalistin in San Francisco, wo sie ihren Sohn Nicky allein großzieht. Doch in Gedanken ist sie immer wieder in New York – und bei Rosie. Da greift das Schicksal in ihr Leben ein: Marga erhält einen Hilferuf von Rosie, als deren Mann, der Zeitungsverleger Simon, nach einem Überfall im Koma liegt.

Vier junge Auswanderer suchen ihr Glück in der Neuen Welt ... Hamburg 1892: Während eine Choleraepidemie in der Stadt wütet, verlassen die junge Marga und ihre Cousine Rosie ihre Heimat für immer. Auf einem Auswandererschiff wagen sie die Fahrt nach Amerika in der Hoffnung auf ein Leben fern von Not und Armut. Während der langen Reise schließen die beiden Freundschaft mit zwei jungen Männern, Simon und Nando, die wie sie auf ein besseres Los in der Neuen Welt hoffen. Die vier beschließen, gemeinsam in New York das Glück zu suchen. Doch dann kommen Rosie und Simon einander näher.

Ein Schicksalsschlag stürzt drei deutsche Auswanderer in eine Krise, doch die Freunde kämpfen für ihr Glück …. New York 1904: Eine Tragödie versetzt die Stadt in Aufruhr und verändert das Schicksal der vier deutschen Auswanderer, die sich in New York ein neues Leben aufgebaut haben: Als beim Untergang eines Ausflugsdampfers zahllose Menschen im East River ertrinken, ist unter den Opfern auch die Auswanderin Rosie.
