Seventeenth-century Puritan John Bunyan speaks to us in a way that is much different from usual preachers. Given his own struggles with his faith, his words come from a place of no judgement and so can reach us far deeper. Bunyan explains to us the different levels of fear as felt through our path to Christ: first the fear that brings us to God, then the fear the Devil plants in us to make us doubt, and the fear of God himself which is not an evil, but one that gives us the desire to glorify Him.

All Loves Excelling is John Bunyan's sermon on Ephesians 3:18-19: "That ye...may be able to comprehend with all saints, what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; and to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge." The works of John Bunyan are still relevant today as they were 300 years ago. Bunyan faced a lot of religious persecution due to his nonconformist preaching, and due to his faith, he was thrown into prison. Fearing that he might die in prison, John Bunyan synthesized all his struggles and journey of salvation into his writings so that his readers may follow on his path and find God.

O Peregrino inicia com um poema no qual descreve os motivos para a obra e a razão de usar formas alegóricas (semelhante aos autos do teatro medieval) para contar a aventura do viajante que se encontra com personagens de carne e osso, mas que possuem nomes simbólicos que remetem ao evangelho de Jesus Cristo, como Evangelista, Adulação, Malicia, Apoliom e Vigilância.
