Siddhartha, written by Hermann Hesse in 1920 deals with a man's lifelong search for self discovery during the time of Buddha. He grows up the son of a Brahman, and his quest for self discovery takes him through living as an asthetic until he actually meets the Buddha, but decides not to follow him, but rather discover the joys of sex and a wealth through a beautiful courtesan. He lives the life of the Playboy until one day he renounces it all to seek a more spiritual being. In the end Siddhartha does find enlightenment.

La novela que influenció toda una generación. El Lobo estepario es una de las grandes novelas del premio Nobel de 1946 Hermann Hesse (1877-1962), por tratar en forma profunda el tema del antagonismo entre las dos naturalezas de un individuo, en este caso Harry Haller, una persona desilusionada de la vida, que alterna la que se considera naturaleza bondadosa del ser humano con la ferocidad que caracteriza al lobo estepario.

"Die Schule ist die einzige moderne Kulturfrage, die ich ernst nehme und die mich gelegentlich aufregt. An mir hat die Schule viel kaputt gemacht, und ich kenne wenig bedeutende Persönlichkeiten, denen es nicht ähnlich ging." So Hermann Hesse über sein viel diskutiertes Werk an einen seiner Brüder, der sich später - nicht zuletzt aufgrund in der Schulzeit gelegter Probleme - umbrachte.

Protagonista è il giovane EmiI Sinclair, caduto sotto l'influsso di un cattivo compagno di scuola, Franz Kromer, che lo spinge a ingannare i genitori, rubare e discendere la china del peccato.

Il disagio di fronte alla volgarità e alla massificazione della società moderna, la ricerca di valori più elevati, la forza liberatrice degli impulsi primordiali, il rimettersi in gioco a partire da una nuova consapevolezza. Sono questi alcuni dei temi che si intrecciano nel "Lupo della steppa", uno dei romanzi più "radicali" e più affascinanti di Hesse, pubblicato nel 1927 in un'Europa in cui i regimi totalitari si andavano moltiplicando.

Siddhartha, figlio di un bramino, lascia la casa paterna accompagnato dall'amico Govinda, alla ricerca della verità assoluta, di una saggezza che si accordi totalmente con la vita umana.
