As travelling salesman Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams, he found himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic insect. He was lying on his hard - as if it were armor-plated - back, and when he lifted his head a little he could see his domelike brown belly divided into stiff arched segments, on top of which the bed quilt could hardly stay in place and was about to slide off completely. His numerous legs, which were pitifully thin compared to the rest of his bulk, waved helplessly before his eyes.

Franz Kafka was born on 3rd July 1883 in Prague, then in Bohemia, the eldest of 6, into a middle-class Jewish family. Life for the young Kafka and his passion for literature was often made an ordeal by his over-bearing and domineering entrepreneur of a father. His literary works are few in number but towering in influence. His masterpieces include ‘The Trial’, ‘The Metamorphosis’ as well as a number of short stories which reveal facets of humankind that truthfully could only be born from Kafka’s brain and pen.

Franz Kafka was one of the first and greatest masters of dystopian literature. In his bleak world view, man is presented as helpless and ineffectual, his destiny determined by distant, obscure and essentially unfriendly agencies. In none of his works is this savage and unreasoning enslavement presented more vividly than in Metamorphosis, a novella in which Gregor Samsa, a respectable employee and dutiful son, wakes to find himself transformed into a gigantic insect.

Il Processo è uno dei più celebri romanzi di Franz Kafka. Lasciato incompiuto dallo scrittore e pubblicato postumo nel 1925, racconta la vicenda, surreale e angosciante, del procuratore di banca Josef K., che una mattina, senza conoscerne le ragioni, viene arrestato. Certo che si tratti di un errore, il giovane procuratore tenta di scoprire quale sia il capo d'imputazione sul quale si basa il processo che gli è intentato.
