ಬ್ರಿಟಿಷರಿಗೆ ಸಿಂಹಸ್ವಪ್ನವಾಗಿದ್ದ ಟಿಪೂ ಕನಸುಗಾರ ದೊರೆ. ಅವನು ತಾನು ಕಂಡ ಕನಸುಗಳನ್ನು ಟಿಪ್ಪಣಿ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆದಿಟ್ಟಿ‌ದ್ದ, ಅದು ಪುಸ್ತಕ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಕಟವಾಗಿದೆ.ಭಾರತಕ್ಕೆ ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯ ದೊರೆತ ಸ್ವರ್ಣ ಮಹೋತ್ಸವ ವರ್ಷದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಿಬಿಸಿಯು ಗಿರೀಶರಿಗೆ ನಾಟಕ ಬರೆಯುವಂತೆ ಕೋರಿದಾಗ ಅವರು ಟಿಪೂವನ್ನು ವಸ್ತುವಾಗಿ ಆಯ್ಕೆ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡರು. ಟಿಪೂವಿನ ಕನಸುಗಳನ್ನು ನಾಟಕವಾಗಿಸಿದರು. ಓದು ಕೃತಿಯಾಗಿ ಯಶಸ್ವಿಯಾದ ಈ ನಾಟಕ ರಂಗದ ಮೇಲೆಯೂ ಮುಖ್ಯವಾಗಿತ್ತು.ಗಿರೀಶ ಕಾರ್ನಾಡ್ ಅವರ ನಾಟಕ 'ಟಿಪ್ಪು ಸುಲ್ತಾನ್ ಕಂಡ ಕನಸು' - 1997ರಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾರತೀಯ ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಐವತ್ತು ತುಂಬಿದ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ...

'ನಾಗಮಂಡಲ' ನಾಟಕವು ಜಾನಪದ ಕತೆಯನ್ನು ಆಧರಿಸಿ ರಚಿಸಿದ ನಾಟಕ. 'ನಾಗಮಂಡಲ'ದ ನಾಯಕಿ ರಾಣಿ. ಅವಳ ಪತಿ ಅಪ್ಪಣ್ಣ. ಪತಿಯನ್ನು ಒಲಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಬೇರಿನ ಸಾರು ತಯಾರಿಸುವ ರಾಣಿ ಅದು ಒಡೆದು ಹಾಳಾದದ್ದನ್ನು ನೋಡಿ ಸಮೀಪದ ಹುತ್ತಕ್ಕೆ ಸುರಿಯುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಅಲ್ಲಿನ ನಾಗ ಅವಳ ಮೇಲೆ ಮನಸೋತು ಪತಿಯ ವೇಷದಲ್ಲಿ ಮನೆಯೊಳಗೆ ಬಂದು ರಾಣಿಯೊಡನೆ ಸರಸ-ಸಲ್ಲಾಪ ನಡೆಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಅವಳು ಗರ್ಭಿಣಿಯಾದದ್ದನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿ ಕೋಪಗೊಳ್ಳುವ ಪತಿ ತನ್ನ ಹೆಂಡತಿಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಆರೋಪ ಹೊರಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ನಾಗದಿವ್ಯದ ಮೂಲಕ ಸತ್ಯ ಸಾರುವ ರಾಣಿ ಜನಮನ್ನಣೆಗೆ ಪಾತ್ರಳಾಗುತ್ತಾಳೆ.

"ಬಲಿ" ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ 1980 ರಲ್ಲಿ "ಹಿಟ್ಟಿನ ಹುಂಜ" ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರಿನಿಂದ ಮೊದಲು ಪ್ರಕಟವಾಯಿತು. ಇದನ್ನು ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ಕನ್ನಡ ಮಹಾಕಾವ್ಯವಾದ ಯಶೋಧರ ಚರಿತ್ರೆಯಿಂದ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ನಾಟಕವು ಪುರಾತನ ಮಹಾಕಾವ್ಯವನ್ನು ಆಧರಿಸಿದ್ದರೂ, ಇದು ಹಲವು ಶತಮಾನಗಳ ಹಿಂದಿನಂತೆಯೇ ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತವಾದ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಗಳನ್ನು ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತಪಡಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ನಾಟಕದ ಕಥಾವಸ್ತುವು ನಾಲ್ಕು ಪಾತ್ರಗಳನ್ನು ಒಳಗೊಂಡಿದೆ-ರಾಜ, ರಾಣಿ, ಮಹಾರಾಣಿ (ರಾಜನ ತಾಯಿ), ಮಾವುತ. ಹಿಂದೂ ಧರ್ಮ ಮತ್ತು ಜೈನ ಧರ್ಮ ಎಂಬ ಎರಡು ಧರ್ಮಗಳಿಗೆ ಸಂಬಂಧಿಸಿದ ಎರಡು ಸಾಂಪ್ರದಾಯಿಕ ಸಿದ್ಧಾಂತಗಳಾದ ಹಿಂಸೆ ಮತ್ತು ಅಹಿಂಸೆಗಳ ನಡುವಿನ ಮುಖಾಮುಖಿಯನ್ನು ನಾಟಕದ ಮೂಲಕ ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತಪಡಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ.

ಗಿರೀಶ ಕಾರ್ನಾಡ ಅವರು ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ-ಪೌರಾಣಿಕ ಕತೆಗಳನ್ನು ಆಧರಿಸಿ ನಾಟಕ ಬರೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ ಎಂಬ ಆರೋಪ ಸರ್ವೇಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ. ಕಾರ್ನಾಡರ 'ಅಂಜುಮಲ್ಲಿಗೆ' ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಅಪವಾದದಂತಿದೆ. ಇದೊಂದು ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಕಥಾವಸ್ತು ಉಳ್ಳ ನಾಟಕ. ನಾಟಕೀಯ ಅಂಶಗಳು ಈ ಕೃತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇವೆ. ಆದರೆ, ರಂಗದ ಮೇಲೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಈ ನಾಟಕ ಯಶಸ್ಸು ಕಾಣಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಓದು ನಾಟಕವಾಗಿ ಪ್ರಿಯವಾಗುತ್ತದೆಯಾದರೂ ಗಾಢವಾಗಿ ತಟ್ಟುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

ರಾಮಾಯಣವನ್ನು ಆಧರಿಸಿ, ಈ ಕಿರು ನಾಟಕವು ಕಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಮನ ಪಾತ್ರವನ್ನು ಪ್ರಶ್ನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ರಾಮನನ್ನು ತಿರಸ್ಕರಿಸುವ ಒಬ ಅಗಸ ಮತ್ತೆ ರಾಮನನ್ನು ಆರಾಧಿಸುವ ಅವನ ಹೆಂಡತಿ ನಡುವೆ ನಡೆವುಯ ಜಗಳದ ಮೂಲಕ ಕಥೆ ನಡೆಯುತದೆ.
